It is Christmas and misternouse is weary. This weekend he turned to the stories of J. D. Salinger for solace and found it. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters features Buddy Glass at his self-deprecatory best, the spirit of Seymour hovering over the story like an angel. No one has ever given the religious life as it converges with our own lives a better, sweeter treatment. I read some from Nine Stories and wondered if there might be more somewhere in Vermont. The girls reading group has undertaken to read the Salinger oeuvre sans Holden Caulfield. There may soon be a boys reading group.
Have you read the marvellous Man Walks Into a Room by Nicole Kraus(s?), a very nearly perfect book, intelligent and finely written.
