During the Reign of the Queen of Persia by Joan Chase, one of the great rural novels about a farmer, his wife(The Queen of Persia), and their five daughters drawn with such elegant strokes so as to draw out maximum humor or poignancy from material at hand. About seventy pages in mid-book are devoted the death by cancer of a beloved aunt. Brilliant cryin' stuff. A Christian Scientist aunt appears to wonderful effect. A family neither too wholesome nor too dysfunctional. Chase wrote a couple of disappointing novels after this gem.
